Jaxx Liberty Recovery: Restore Your Wallet

In short

Jaxx Liberty has been retired, but its 12-word recovery phrase can still restore the accounts derived from it. Choose a maintained wallet that supports the relevant assets, networks and derivation paths; accepting the phrase alone does not establish compatibility with every Jaxx account.

Use an independently stored phrase backup where available. Preserve an old installation before trying to extract anything, and avoid replacement “Jaxx recovery” downloads. If the phrase is incomplete or missing, existing device data, backups or previously exported private keys may still warrant assessment. After restoration, compare known receiving addresses and check each asset separately. A missing balance needs investigation, not an immediate conclusion that the funds are lost.

Choose the route that matches your backup

  • Complete phrase: restore it in a maintained wallet that supports the relevant network and address settings.
  • Original device: preserve the app data before updating, reinstalling or resetting anything.
  • Existing backup or key export: keep the original. A wallet-data backup may need assessment; a private key covers its corresponding account, not every Jaxx asset.
  • Partial phrase: record which words and positions are certain. Feasibility depends on what is missing; it is not guaranteed.

Describe the available material in an assessment without sending the phrase, private keys or passwords.

Non-custodial and BIP-39

Jaxx used a 12-word BIP-39 recovery phrase. The phrase can recreate its derived keys after the app’s retirement, but the replacement wallet must support the asset, network and derivation path. BIP-39 support alone does not mean every Jaxx account will appear.

The phrase is the main backup, not the only potentially useful recovery material. Original app data, device backups and previously exported private keys may also matter.

Preserve an old installation before using it

Prefer a phrase backup you already stored independently. Do not download a replacement Jaxx app to retrieve it. If the original device remains, preserve its data before attempting access and avoid resets or reinstallations.

An accessible installation may still contain the phrase and account records. Handle it cautiously: Edge changed its migration advice after reports of losses during key extraction, recommending an existing phrase backup instead. Its migration warning explains why exposing keys is not a routine first step.

Keep known receiving addresses, the assets and networks used, and any earlier key exports. Old displayed balances may be stale. If the app no longer opens, preserve the device and its backups for assessment.

How to recover Jaxx Liberty: step by step

  1. Find the 12-word backup phrase.
  2. Choose a compatible BIP39 wallet (Edge, Exodus, MetaMask or another maintained wallet). Download it only from the official site or app store — never from a search ad.
  3. Install the wallet and choose "Restore" or "Import Wallet".
  4. Enter the 12 words in the exact order they were given to you.
  5. Check the derivation paths for the coins you held (see below) and re-add tokens such as ERC-20 assets.
  6. Confirm the balances, then move the funds to a fresh wallet you set up yourself and keep the new phrase offline.

Never enter your 12 words into a website, and never send them through forms or chat.

Derivation paths by coin

Jaxx derived addresses from the phrase using different paths for different assets. The replacement wallet must support the relevant network and path; not every wallet exposes a manual path setting:

CoinDerivation path
Bitcoinm/44'/0'/0'
Ethereum & ERC-20 tokensm/44'/60'/0'/0/0
Bitcoin Cashm/44'/145'/0'
Litecoin (P2PKH, legacy)m/44'/2'/0'
Dogecoinm/44'/3'/0'
Dashm/44'/5'/0'

If a balance is missing after restoring, check the path setting in the new wallet before assuming the coins are lost. Jaxx's older address formats are the usual reason a restored wallet looks empty: the funds are still there, behind a path the new wallet didn't try by default.

If you no longer have the phrase

  • The app is still installed: open it and read the phrase out before the device is retired or wiped.
  • An old phone or computer: search it for notes, screenshots, a password-manager entry or a device backup before you do anything else with it.
  • A partial phrase: reconstruction is a bounded search. One missing word is 2,048 candidates; two are about 4.2 million; three are about 8.6 billion — each stage is slower but still searchable on the right hardware, as long as the rest of the words are exact. The word list and checksum are what make this possible.
  • No phrase, no device, no backup: the wallet cannot be rebuilt. No service can reconstruct keys that were never written down anywhere.

Common issues and solutions

  • Entering the 12-word phrase incorrectly invalidates it: the words must be in the exact order and spelled correctly, and one typo or a swapped word changes everything. If words are missing or uncertain, that is a bounded search — see the incomplete recovery phrase page.
  • The new wallet may scan a different derivation path than Jaxx Liberty did. The phrase still restores the same keys, but a wallet checking the wrong path shows an empty balance; selecting the right path fixes it.
  • Coins missing after a restore are usually hidden behind a wrong default view, not lost: re-add the assets you held and check the network.

Honest limits

  • Jaxx itself is gone: do not trust 'Jaxx recovery' downloads or login pages.
  • If you remember part of the phrase, reconstruction is a bounded search; if you remember nothing, it is not.
  • Some coins in the old Jaxx app used address formats that a modern wallet does not show by default. A missing balance after a restore is usually an address-type or network setting, not a lost coin, and it's fixable.

What to gather

The mnemonic (or as many words as you are sure of), any backup file from the wallet's data folder, the coins and networks you used, and what you remember about a password or passphrase if one was set. That's enough for a free assessment; no secrets need to be sent through forms or chat.

When to bring in a specialist

If the phrase is missing words, the order is uncertain, or a restored wallet still looks empty after you've checked the paths, that's the point to ask us. We've rebuilt access to Jaxx and Jaxx Liberty wallets since 2019; partial-phrase reconstruction, derivation-path checks and old backup files are the typical cases. The first assessment is free and needs no sensitive material.

What Jaxx Liberty was

Jaxx was a multi-coin wallet by Decentral. The original Jaxx launched in beta in February 2016; the redesigned successor, Jaxx Liberty, arrived in July 2018. It stood out for supporting dozens of cryptocurrencies in one app — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Dogecoin and many others — and for its early integration with ShapeShift. It was non-custodial: Decentral never touched or controlled your money.

FAQ

What is the Jaxx Liberty wallet?

Jaxx Liberty, launched in July 2018, was the redesigned successor to the original Jaxx wallet, which had appeared in beta in February 2016. Users could manage dozens of cryptocurrencies in one app, with a 12-word backup phrase and full control of their keys.

What happened to the Jaxx Liberty wallet?

Jaxx Liberty stopped its services on March 27, 2023. The apps no longer update and transactions no longer run through them, but the wallet was never custodial, so the keys stayed with the users.

Can I still use the Jaxx app?

The app no longer receives updates and transactions no longer run through it. Restoring your phrase in a maintained wallet is the reliable route.

Do I need Jaxx to restore my wallet?

No. Use a maintained wallet that supports the phrase’s standard, the relevant network and Jaxx’s address derivation. Check each asset against a known address.

How can I recover my Jaxx Liberty wallet?

Move the funds to another wallet like Edge or Exodus using your 12-word backup phrase. The phrase restores the same addresses; the new wallet is just the interface.

Where can I find my 12-word backup phrase?

If you still have the Jaxx Liberty app, look under "Security" for the backup phrase. You can also check old notes, password managers and backups from when you first used the wallet.

How do I migrate to Edge or Exodus?

Download the wallet from its official site or app store, choose "Restore" or "Import Wallet", and enter the 12 words in the exact order they were given to you. Then check the derivation paths for the coins you held and re-add tokens such as ERC-20 assets.

What derivation paths should I use?

Bitcoin: m/44'/0'/0'. Ethereum and its tokens: m/44'/60'/0'/0/0. Bitcoin Cash: m/44'/145'/0'. Dash: m/44'/5'/0'. Dogecoin: m/44'/3'/0'. Litecoin: m/44'/2'/0' (P2PKH, legacy).

I have part of the phrase — can it be rebuilt?

Often, yes. Each missing word multiplies the raw candidate count by 2,048 (one word: 2,048; two: about 4.2 million; three: about 8.6 billion), and the checksum discards most of them before any key is derived. One to three missing words stay searchable on the right hardware, as long as the words you do have are exact and in the right positions. With nothing to start from, there's nothing to search.

I restored the phrase but a balance is missing — what now?

Check three things before you assume anything: the network, the address type or derivation path (the table above lists Jaxx's), and whether the token was re-added in the new wallet. A successful restore for one asset does not confirm that the replacement wallet supports every other asset; check each network and address separately.

Where can I get professional help?

Contact us. We've rebuilt access to Jaxx and Jaxx Liberty wallets since 2019, and the first assessment is free.

Still locked out?

The first assessment is free, and it asks for no wallet secrets. Describe what you still have — a file, a phrase, a device, or what you remember — and we’ll tell you whether recovery is realistic. You only pay if the recovery succeeds.
