Bitcoin Core Wallet Recovery Service

Bitcoin Core wallet.dat recovery: forgotten passwords, corruption and deleted files - free assessment, success-based.

Quick answers

Can Bitcoin Core keys be recovered without wallet.dat?

No. Bitcoin Core has no recovery phrase - the keys live in the wallet.dat file. Without the file, a backup or an export, there is nothing to work from.

Is wallet.dat encryption bypassable?

No, and anyone claiming otherwise is not describing something that can be done. Recovery is a password search against the file encryption, on a copy.

My wallet is from 2011-2015. Does that matter?

It can, though not because of Randstorm - that weakness was in the JSBN library early BitcoinJS web wallets relied on, not in Bitcoin Core. For this era it is the legacy Berkeley DB wallet.dat format that is worth assessing before writing the wallet off.

Bitcoin Core is the one major Bitcoin wallet with no recovery phrase. Your keys live in a file called wallet.dat, and the password you set is the only lock. That single fact decides every recovery route.

What you are actually dealing with

  • Encrypted wallet, forgotten password: a password-search problem. Nothing else matters until the password is found.
  • Corrupted wallet.dat: recovery depends on which records remain intact. Damage to an index does not prove that the keys are lost, but repair cannot be assumed before the file is examined.
  • Deleted or missing wallet.dat: a file-recovery problem on the drive.
  • Old wallet from 2009–2015: a format problem. Bitcoin Core 30 can no longer create or load legacy Berkeley DB wallets — they have to be migrated to the descriptor format, which needs the right tooling or an older Core build.

What is genuinely hard (and when a specialist earns their fee)

  • The password search space: Bitcoin Core derives the wallet key with at least 25,000 SHA-512 rounds, so GPU speed matters. What actually narrows it is what you remember: a rough password length, the words, numbers or a pattern you tend to reuse, or roughly when you set it. Each detail cuts the candidate list down, and we assess it before any commitment.
  • Deleted wallet.dat on a drive that has been in use since deletion: odds shrink with every write. On a preserved drive, recovery is often possible. Stop using the drive now.
  • Severely truncated wallet.dat where keys must be carved out of surviving records.

What is impossible

  • No wallet.dat, no backup, no private-key export, and no drive to recover from. Bitcoin Core has no phrase to fall back on.
  • wallet.dat files offered for sale: a known scam. The seller keeps a copy of the keys, or the advertised balance was never real.

Practical notes

  • You do not need to download the whole blockchain to recover keys. A full sync is only needed to use Bitcoin Core afterwards; keys can be exported and swept into a lighter wallet.
  • Bitcoin Core can unlock an encrypted wallet through its interface or the walletpassphrase command. Recovery tools can also test password candidates against a copy of the wallet file. These methods still depend on the correct secret; they do not bypass the encryption.
