Forgot MetaMask Password? Reset & Recover It
In short
If you forgot your MetaMask password, first preserve the original browser profile or app installation. With a verified Secret Recovery Phrase, you can restore its accounts and choose a new password. Without the phrase, a surviving encrypted vault may support an offline password search; resetting or removing the extension can erase that material.
Check password-manager records, keyboard settings and remembered variations before changing anything. Accounts created through Google, Apple or Telegram still require the MetaMask password alongside that login: signing in to the provider does not reset a forgotten password. Separately imported keys and connected hardware accounts need their own recovery route. MetaMask cannot send you the missing password.

A forgotten MetaMask password locks you out of the extension, not the funds: what decides how you get back in is whether you still have the Secret Recovery Phrase.
If your MetaMask wallet was created by signing in with a Google, Apple or Telegram account, the recovery route is different: you need access to that account and the MetaMask password. The social account alone does not replace a forgotten MetaMask password. If you previously revealed and backed up the Secret Recovery Phrase, you can restore with that phrase; otherwise, do not reset MetaMask and contact official MetaMask Support before changing the installation.
With the Secret Recovery Phrase, resetting the password is the few steps below. Without it, the phrase itself has to be reconstructed or the vault has to be searched — both covered further down this page.
What Happens if You Forget Your MetaMask Password
You can still reset your wallet using the 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. The password only encrypts the Secret Recovery Phrase and private keys on this device; it does not touch the funds, which stay on the blockchain. Without the password you cannot log in or send transactions, but the crypto itself is not gone.
Most people come to us with a request “I forgot my MetaMask password” simply because they don’t use it often. Sometimes, in an effort to protect their wallet, they create a password that’s too complex and end up locking themselves out when they need access the most.
The Difference Between Password and Secret Recovery Phrase
For a MetaMask wallet set up with a Secret Recovery Phrase, the password unlocks a particular installation. The recovery phrase restores the accounts derived from that phrase on another device. It does not contain separately imported private keys or the keys held by a connected hardware wallet. During setup, you choose the password and MetaMask gives you the phrase to back up securely.
Immediate Steps to Take When You Forgot Your MetaMask Password
If you’ve forgotten your password, your first step should be trying out any combinations you’ve used before. It may sound too trivial, but thinking hard and going through familiar patterns can help jog your memory. MetaMask passwords are usually a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
We recommend building a password hint list. It may include important dates, pet names, anniversaries, favorite words, family names, or the year when you created the wallet. Double-check your keyboard language settings and make sure Caps Lock isn’t messing things up. Writing the list down is often enough on its own to jog the password back into memory.
Also, remember to check:
- Password managers
- Old notebooks
- Saved emails
- Hidden drawers or safes
Preserve the original installation before resetting
Do not reset MetaMask, remove the extension, clear browser data or discard the original device until you have confirmed a working recovery route. A MetaMask reset removes the wallets and accounts from that installation. For a wallet created with a Secret Recovery Phrase, verify the phrase and a working recovery route for every other account before proceeding, including separately imported private keys and connected hardware wallets. For a wallet created with Google, Apple or Telegram, confirm access to both the external account and the MetaMask password.
If the phrase is missing, the encrypted vault in the original browser profile may be the only material against which password candidates can be tested. Preserve the entire browser profile before making changes, work only from a copy, and never upload the vault, phrase, private keys or password hints to an online “recovery” tool.
MetaMask Password Reset
The easiest way back into your MetaMask wallet is to reset the password with your Secret Recovery Phrase.
How to Reset MetaMask Password (Using Secret Recovery Phrase)
To reset your MetaMask password:
- Open MetaMask Wallet and choose “Import using Secret Recovery Phrase”
- Enter your 12-word phrase in the correct order
- Set a new password
- Access your wallet again
Having trouble? Make sure your Secret Recovery Phrase is correct. Also, check that you’re using the right MetaMask version.
Why You May Not Be Able to Reset MetaMask Password
A password reset usually fails because the Secret Recovery Phrase itself is lost or entered incorrectly. There are a few important requirements for a seed phrase to reset the MetaMask password:
- First of all, all the words must belong to the BIP-39 standard, which means if you make even a small mistake, you should double-check for typos and misspellings.
- Second, the word count must be a valid BIP-39 length — 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24. MetaMask creates 12 by default but will import any of these; 13 or 20 words is never valid.
- The words also need to be in the exact order you received them. Swap two words and the phrase will usually fail MetaMask’s checksum — and if a swapped order happens to pass, it restores a different, empty wallet rather than yours.
Here is an article on how to find missing pieces of your secret recovery phrase. If you still can not get it right, Crypto Recovers assesses incomplete recovery phrases case by case — feasibility depends on how many words are missing, whether their positions are known, and whether a known address can test the candidates.
Recover MetaMask Password
If you’ve lost your MetaMask password and don’t have your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase, but you still have access to the same computer and browser where MetaMask was used, you still have a chance.
Open-source password tools such as Hashcat and John the Ripper can test candidates against your vault, but setup is technical and fake 'recovery tool' downloads are a common way wallets get emptied — download these tools only from their official sites (hashcat.net and openwall.com), never from search-ad links. These tools work on MetaMask’s encrypted vault file, which lives in the browser extension’s data folder on the original device: if you no longer have that computer or browser profile, password cracking isn’t possible. The vault is what gets cracked, not MetaMask’s servers. A specialist runs the same search for you.
Forgot Both MetaMask Password and the Recovery Phrase? Contact Crypto Recovers
If you have lost both the MetaMask password and the Secret Recovery Phrase, the outcome depends on what remains. If the original encrypted vault still exists, it remains a recovery target. Remembered password details can help focus an offline candidate search. If there is no recovery phrase, surviving vault, exported private key or active access, there is no recovery material; neither MetaMask nor a recovery service can recreate missing key material.
However, your last resort is to contact a crypto recovery service like us, Crypto Recovers. We’ve developed custom password recovery tools and specialize in wallets with invalid or incomplete seed phrases.
You can call us or arrange to visit our office, so we can look at your case: whether the original vault survives, and what you remember of the password, decides whether a search is worth running. After that, we’ll ask what wallet-related information you still have, including any password hints. Never share your full recovery phrase — hints and a description are enough for the assessment.

FAQ: MetaMask Password Recovery
What is my MetaMask password?
Your MetaMask password is the one you created during wallet setup and is stored only locally. If you’ve forgotten it, MetaMask cannot reveal it. Instead, use your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase to reset the wallet and set a new password. Always store both securely to avoid permanent loss.
How to retrieve MetaMask password?
MetaMask cannot reveal or send you the password because it is not stored on MetaMask’s servers. With the Secret Recovery Phrase, you can restore the wallet and set a new password. Without the phrase, the original encrypted vault remains a target for local candidate testing; remembered details can help focus the search. This is password recovery, not a server-side reset.
What should I do if I forget my MetaMask password?
First preserve the original installation and browser profile. If you have verified the Secret Recovery Phrase, you can restore the wallet and set a new password. If the phrase is missing, do not reset MetaMask or remove the extension: the encrypted vault may be the only material available for an offline password search. A wallet created with Google, Apple or Telegram requires access to both that account and the MetaMask password; contact official MetaMask Support before resetting if either is unavailable.
Why is my MetaMask password not working?
If your MetaMask password isn’t working, it may be due to typos, keyboard layout issues, or corrupted browser data. Double-check for caps lock or hidden characters. If you’re certain the password is correct but still locked out, resetting the wallet using the Secret Recovery Phrase may be your only option.
How to get into MetaMask without password?
There is no password bypass. With the Secret Recovery Phrase, you can restore the wallet and choose a new password. Without the phrase, the original encrypted vault remains a target for a local password search, but MetaMask cannot reset the password. Wallets created with Google, Apple or Telegram require both the external account and the MetaMask password.
How to recover MetaMask password without seed phrase?
The original encrypted vault remains the recovery target; remembered details can make a local candidate search more focused. MetaMask cannot reset or retrieve the password from its servers. If there is no Secret Recovery Phrase, surviving vault, exported private key or active access, there is no wallet material to recover.
