Toast (XRP): Restore Your Wallet With the Backup Code and Passphrase

In short

Toast Wallet recovery depends on surviving wallet data or an Account Secret. Its six recovery words can unlock the corresponding encrypted data, but cannot recreate an XRP account on their own.

  • An exported JSON backup needs its passphrase or matching six-word phrase. An older backup contains the accounts and credentials saved at that time, not subsequent changes.
  • If Toast is still installed, preserve its data. Reset PIN accepts the passphrase or six-word phrase. With access and the passphrase, Show Secret reveals the Account Secret for each account.
  • An Account Secret can restore that account in a compatible XRP Ledger wallet. Check the resulting public address. A missing passphrase or damaged backup needs assessment; do not overwrite the original or submit secrets to online checkers.
Toast (XRP): Restore Your Wallet With the Backup Code and Passphrase

Your XRP is sitting behind an app that no longer exists. Toast Wallet left the app stores in 2020, the developers moved on, and now the passphrase gets rejected — or you can’t even find the app anymore. Your XRP never lived in the app, though. It lives on the XRP Ledger, untouched, and Toast wallet recovery comes down to one question: what wallet data and credentials do you still have?

First, figure out what you still have

Toast worked with three separate items, and a restore fails when they are mixed up.

The backup code

A long block of scrambled text (a JSON string) that you exported when you set the wallet up. This is the real wallet backup. Toast didn’t build your addresses from one master seed the way modern wallets do. The code contains the accounts included when that backup was exported.

Make a new backup after adding an account or changing the passphrase or PIN. An older backup restores the state saved at that time: later passphrase or PIN changes do not apply to that copy, and it does not include accounts added later. Keep all existing backup codes; an older copy may still be useful if a newer one is damaged.

The passphrase

The password you chose yourself, at least 8 characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number, and a special character. Toast asked for it whenever you sent XRP.

The 6-word recovery phrase

Six short English words. Despite the name, this is not a wallet backup — Toast even made you tick a box confirming you understood that. These words can unlock the encrypted wallet data when the passphrase is forgotten and can also be used with Reset PIN in an existing installation. They cannot recreate an XRP account without the wallet data.

There’s also the 6-digit PIN for opening the app, but that’s the smallest hurdle of the four. More on it below.

Before you try anything: search everywhere for that backup code. Old emails to yourself, cloud notes, screenshots, text files, phone backups, the downloads folder of a laptop you retired years ago. And when you find it, copy and paste it — never retype it. A copying error can prevent the code from being imported.

If Toast rejects the backup code, keep the original unchanged and check an exact copy. Altered quotation marks or other formatting errors can sometimes be corrected without changing the encrypted data. Missing or overwritten encrypted data is a different problem: correcting the formatting does not restore it. Do not discard a backup just because an import fails, and do not paste it into an online validator.

The app still opens on an old device

Best case

If Toast is still installed somewhere and you know the PIN, open it, go to the backup section, and export a fresh backup code. Save two copies in separate places.

If you also know the passphrase, open each account and choose Show Secret, enter the passphrase, then select Reveal Secret. The Account Secret is the secret for that individual XRP Ledger account, not Toast’s six-word recovery phrase. Record it offline and keep it private.

An Account Secret can be imported into a maintained XRP Ledger wallet that supports this format, without using Toast’s backup code. Check that it produces the same public address. Repeat this for each account you need to recover. Importing the secret restores access to the same account; it does not move XRP to a new address.

Then move your XRP out. Toast will never receive another update, so it is a bridge, not a home: send your XRP to a wallet that’s still maintained, one you set up yourself. A small bonus many returning owners don’t expect — old Toast accounts locked 20 XRP as the network reserve, and the XRP Ledger lowered that reserve to 1 XRP in late 2024. Most of that locked amount is spendable now.

If the app is still installed but you have forgotten the PIN, do not uninstall it or clear its data. Use Reset PIN with either the passphrase or the six-word recovery phrase belonging to that installation; either one is sufficient to set a new PIN. If neither is available, preserve the app data for assessment. A 6-digit PIN has at most a million combinations. That’s a tiny search space by recovery standards, which makes this one of the more solvable situations — provided the app and its data stay exactly where they are.

You have the backup code and your passphrase

Then restoring is straightforward. The app stores removed Toast in 2020, so the only legitimate source left is the original Toast Wallet project on GitHub. Anything else offering a “new official Toast Wallet” is fake — the app is discontinued, and nobody is releasing updated versions of it.

  • Install the app from the archived project.
  • Choose the import or restore option and paste your backup code.
  • Enter your passphrase when asked.
  • If the app warns that restoring will erase the current wallet on the device, that’s normal — it only matters if the device already holds another wallet.

Once you’re in, do the same as above: send the XRP to a maintained wallet you control, and stop relying on Toast.

One warning about the archived browser version of Toast: it connects to the XRP test network, not the real one. It can show a zero balance while your actual XRP sits untouched on the ledger. A zero balance there tells you nothing about your funds.

You have the backup code but forgot the passphrase

Two routes, depending on whether the 6-word phrase survived.

You still have the 6 words. This is exactly what they exist for. Use the recover-passphrase option, enter the words, and set a new passphrase. The phrase decrypts your backup directly, so the forgotten passphrase stops mattering.

The 6 words are gone too. The encrypted backup remains the material against which passphrase candidates can be tested systematically. Remembered details can help focus the search, and the complete case requires assessment.

A long, random passphrase creates a much larger search space. This is the kind of case our team assesses for free before anyone signs anything; you’ll find how we approach XRP wallet recovery on the service page.

You have the 6-word phrase but no backup code

The six words cannot recreate the account keys by themselves. They need the corresponding encrypted wallet data, whether that survives in the app or in an exported backup code.

What can still work: the code may survive on an old device even if the app looks gone. Wallet data often lingers in app storage, phone backups, or on a laptop drive after an uninstall. If you still own a device that ever ran Toast, stop using it now. Every day of normal use overwrites more of the old data. Recovering deleted wallet data from a drive or phone is standard technical recovery work, and it succeeds more often than people expect — but only if the data hasn’t been written over.

No recoverable app data, no backup code and no Account Secret? Then recovery isn’t possible. Not by us, not by anyone. Be suspicious of any service that claims otherwise.

What not to do

Don’t pay anyone upfront, and walk away from anyone who promises success. Legitimate recovery work is honest about odds.

Don’t retype the backup code by hand. Copy and paste, always.

Don’t judge your balance inside the archived browser wallet — it talks to the test network.

Don’t download Toast Wallet from anywhere except the original GitHub project.

Don’t enter your recovery phrase or backup code into any website that offers to “check” or “validate” it. Do not do this once, do not do it to test. Those sites exist to empty wallets.

Still locked out after working through this?

FAQ

Can I still download Toast Wallet?

No. Toast Wallet was removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play after it was discontinued in 2020. The archived GitHub project is the only legitimate source. Be careful of websites claiming to offer a new or updated official Toast Wallet.

Can I recover my Toast Wallet without the backup code?

Yes, if you still have the Account Secret for the account: it can be imported into a compatible XRP Ledger wallet. Otherwise, an old device or device backup may still contain recoverable Toast app data. The six-word recovery phrase alone cannot recreate the account.

What is the Toast Wallet 6-word recovery phrase used for?

The six-word recovery phrase can reset a forgotten Toast Wallet passphrase or the app PIN, provided the corresponding wallet data is still available in the app or a backup. It is not a standard cryptocurrency recovery phrase and cannot restore the wallet by itself.

Why does my restored Toast Wallet show a zero XRP balance?

A zero balance often means the wallet is connected to the wrong XRP network rather than your actual wallet. Check your XRP address on the XRP Ledger to verify that your funds are still there.

Can a forgotten Toast Wallet passphrase be recovered?

Yes, in many cases. If you have the backup code, the passphrase may be reset with the 6-word recovery phrase or recovered using specialized password recovery techniques, depending on the information available.

Did I lose my XRP when Toast Wallet shut down?

No. Toast Wallet was a non-custodial wallet, so your XRP remained on the XRP Ledger after the app was discontinued. The challenge is recovering access to your wallet, not recovering the cryptocurrency itself.

What does Toast Wallet recovery cost?

The initial assessment is free. If recovery is successful, the fee is a success fee agreed in writing before any work starts. If the wallet cannot be recovered, you do not pay a recovery fee.

Still locked out?

The first assessment is free, and it asks for no wallet secrets. Describe what you still have — a file, a phrase, a device, or what you remember — and we’ll tell you whether recovery is realistic. You only pay if the recovery succeeds.
