What Happens if Your Hardware Wallet Breaks or Gets Lost?
In short
A broken hardware wallet does not itself erase the assets it controls. A valid backup can restore access on compatible replacement hardware, but the backup standard, any passphrase, supported assets and account derivation must match the original setup.
Keep the damaged device unchanged until you have verified the backup. Do not assume every word-based backup is BIP-39: SLIP-39 shares and device-specific backups need their own compatible recovery method. If software restoration is considered, understand that entering hardware-wallet secrets on a computer changes their security exposure. Missing or unreadable backup words need assessment; a warranty replacement supplies hardware, not a reconstruction of lost secrets.

Your hardware wallet is broken: a cracked screen, a button that no longer responds, a USB port that won’t connect, or a device that won’t power on at all. A broken device is not a lost wallet. The coins were never stored on it. They’re records on the blockchain, the device only held the keys, and the recovery phrase (seed phrase) you wrote down at setup can regenerate those keys on a compatible device, with the same passphrase if one was used. Find that phrase before you order a replacement or try to repair anything.
What Exactly Happens When Your Hardware Wallet Breaks?
A hardware wallet does one job: it holds your private keys and signs transactions with them. Every one of those keys was derived from your seed phrase at setup, and the same phrase and any required passphrase derive the same keys again on a compatible device. When the device fails, whatever the cause, you’ve lost the signing tool. The keys can be regenerated. Your balances and transaction history were never on the device either; a replacement restored from the phrase reads them from the blockchain exactly as the old one did.
The usual causes are water damage, a drop, worn components and corrupted firmware. None of them affects the phrase.
Immediate Steps to Take When Your Hardware Wallet Breaks
Find your recovery phrase before you do anything else. Check that all 12, 18 or 24 words are there, that every word is legible, and that the order matches what the device showed you at setup. Then put the broken device somewhere safe and leave it as it is: no repair attempts and no factory reset. A reset wipes the keys, and if the phrase turns out to be missing, a device that still powers on may be the only remaining way in. The replacement can wait until the phrase is in your hands.
A stolen device is the one case where time matters. PIN protection and wipe behavior vary by model and do not guarantee safety. Restore access using your backup on compatible hardware, then move the coins to a new wallet with a fresh recovery phrase as soon as you can (see recovering a Trezor without the device).
If the phrase is missing, damaged or incomplete, what happens next depends on how much of it survives. That case has its own section below.
Recovery Options for Broken Hardware Wallets
There are several options for recovering access to your crypto when your hardware wallet breaks.
Purchase a New Hardware Crypto Wallet
The safest route is a replacement device bought from the manufacturer’s own website. It does not have to be the same brand: most hardware wallets follow the BIP39 standard, and the compatibility section below explains what has to match.
Temporary Software Wallet Access
For urgent access you can import your seed phrase into a BIP-39 software wallet such as Electrum or Exodus. Be clear about the trade-off first: the moment the phrase is typed into an internet-connected computer it is exposed, and that is permanent — uninstalling the software afterwards does not undo it. Use a clean machine, and once you are back in, move the funds to a fresh wallet with a newly generated phrase.
Same Brand vs Different Hardware Wallet Compatibility
A BIP-39 recovery phrase can be used with another brand if the destination supports the original assets, networks and account settings. Any passphrase must match exactly.
This works for standard BIP39 seeds. Note: Ledger’s ‘Ledger Recover’ and certain device-specific setups, and any seed created with a passphrase, may not restore identically across brands — and address-type/derivation settings may need adjusting (see above).
The interface and the list of supported coins differ between brands, so before you restore, check that the new device supports every coin you held.
Many of our clients run into this problem — even if your seed phrase is BIP39-compatible, different wallets can use different derivation paths to generate addresses and private keys. For example, some wallets default to different Bitcoin address types: a seed set up on one wallet using Native SegWit (m/84'/0'/0') may show an empty balance on another wallet defaulting to Legacy (m/44'/0'/0') or Nested SegWit (m/49'/0'/0'). The coins are on the blockchain; you just need to select the matching address type / derivation path. If the paths don’t match, your wallet will restore successfully but show a balance of zero, even though the funds are still on the blockchain.
Step-by-Step Hardware Wallet Recovery Process
As soon as you purchase a new hardware wallet, follow these detailed steps to regain access to your crypto accounts:
Device Setup
- Unbox and connect your new hardware device to your computer
- Download official software. It can be Ledger Live for Ledger hardware wallets or Trezor Suite for Trezor devices
- Choose “Restore from recovery phrase”
- Choose the correct phrase length (12, 18, or 24 words depending on your backup)
Enter Seed Phrase
- Enter each word carefully in the exact order it was given to you during the initial setup
- Double-check spelling and word order: an error can invalidate the phrase or derive different accounts
- Confirm the phrase
- Wait for verification
Account Verification
- Set up a new PIN code for your newly restored device
- Find your existing crypto accounts on the device
- Check whether your crypto holdings match the expected amounts
- Check transaction history to make sure your accounts are completely restored
Security Confirmation
- Test a small transaction to confirm full wallet functionality. The importance of this step is often underrated, but it matters: the risk of sending your crypto to the wrong address is real. Even if just one character in your public key is wrong, your funds could be sent irreversibly to the wrong account
- Update firmware if newer versions are available
- Once you’ve confirmed the new device works, wipe or physically destroy the old one so its data can’t be extracted
The entire process typically takes 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of accounts and cryptocurrencies you hold.
Some hardware wallets also offer other recovery options, like encrypted backups or recovery sheets. You can find this info in the wallet’s manual or on the manufacturer’s website.
Common Mistakes When Dealing with a Broken Hardware Crypto Wallet
Don’t try to repair or factory reset your hardware wallet without your seed phrase
When the device stops working, a factory reset or a home repair looks like the obvious next step. A reset wipes every private key on the device; restoring access afterwards requires a usable backup and any required passphrase. Confirm the phrase is complete and in your hands before you touch any reset option.
Don’t share your seed phrase online or with anyone — ever
When the device breaks, it is tempting to ask for help in forums or on social media. Anyone there who asks for your seed phrase, however helpful they sound, is asking for the wallet itself: whoever has the words can empty it in seconds. No support agent, forum member or recovery service needs them.
Emergency Access Using Software Wallets
When you need to immediately access your funds and can’t wait for hardware device shipping, you can use software wallets temporarily.
Which Software Wallet to Use
Choose by coin and by derivation path, not by reputation. For Bitcoin, Electrum (downloaded from electrum.org only) accepts a BIP39 phrase through ‘I already have a seed’ > Options > BIP39 and then lets you set the address type and derivation path, so you can match what the hardware wallet used. For Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, MetaMask restores the same phrase on the standard Ethereum path. Whichever wallet you pick, confirm two things in its own documentation first: that it accepts your phrase length, and that it can use the address type or path your hardware wallet used. A wallet that cannot will restore without an error and show an empty balance.
Risks of Software Wallet Recovery
Compared to hardware wallets, software wallets expose your seed phrase to significantly higher risks. When you enter your recovery phrase on an internet-connected device, it becomes vulnerable to malware, keyloggers, and phishing attacks.
Some software may not support all the cryptocurrencies on your hardware wallet and may require multiple applications to access your full portfolio. We advise verifying wallet compatibility before entering your seed phrase.
What If You Lost Your Seed Phrase Too
If the recovery phrase is missing, preserve the original device and check for any other backup configured before access was lost. Whether the device offers a recovery route depends on its model, firmware and condition; assessment does not guarantee recovery. If part of the phrase survives, a bounded search may be possible, as explained below. If no usable device, backup or sufficient recovery information remains, the keys cannot be recreated from nothing.
Here is more on how to restore a Trezor seed phrase.
Manufacturer Limitations
Manufacturer support cannot recreate missing keys from nothing. Check whether you have a usable backup, including any alternative backup configured before access was lost. Customer support teams cannot access your private keys or bypass the device’s security measures—this is by design to protect against internal threats and government coercion.
Even with warranty replacement, the new device needs a usable backup and any required passphrase to restore your original accounts. Warranty coverage applies only to hardware replacement, not data recovery services.
It’s Easier to Prevent Losing Your Backup Phrase Than to Recover It
No institution can reissue a seed phrase. Keep two physical copies of it in separate places, and never store it online, not even as a photo.
If you do manage to recover your wallet on a new device, it’s wise to test the recovery process periodically with small amounts. And tell your family where the backups are — this matters for inheritance planning.
Professional Seed Phrase Recovery Services
This is the route when the phrase you have is incomplete or the device rejects it. Crypto Recovers works on partial seed phrase reconstruction when words are missing, unreadable or in the wrong order; there is no fixed word count that qualifies or disqualifies a case, so each one is assessed on what actually survives. The work is a systematic search: candidate words from the 2,048-word BIP39 list are tested position by position, the checksum discards most combinations, and a known receiving address confirms the right one. It can take anywhere from a day to a few weeks.
From our experience, many clients eventually find their original recovery phrase after misplacing it, which is why we always recommend searching thoroughly before turning to professional crypto recovery services.
When you do decide to ask for help, there’s no need to pay upfront fees. No one can guarantee a successful recovery because security features are designed to prevent unauthorized extraction.
Warranty and Manufacturer Support
If the damage isn’t critical and you don’t urgently need access to your funds, you may turn to your warranty provider for replacement device.
Ledger hardware wallets offer a two-year warranty for manufacturing defects on Nano S Plus and Nano X devices. This warranty covers hardware failures not caused by user damage, such as electronic component failures, screen malfunctions, button defects, and USB connection issues.
Trezor provides a similar two-year warranty for hardware failures not resulting from user abuse. To make a claim, you’ll need proof of purchase and the original device packaging.
Warranty replacements usually take about 1–2 weeks for processing and shipping. For devices that are out of warranty, it’s possible to look for screen replacements or USB parts online but we do not recommend to fix the device yourself.
When Professional Help Makes Sense
If the seed is intact, restoring on a new device is all you need. If the phrase is incomplete, partly illegible, or a passphrase is in the way, it becomes a search problem, and that is what a recovery specialist is for: a bounded search instead of guessing on the device. The first assessment is free and needs no sensitive material — see how it works.
FAQ: Lost Hardware Wallet
What happens if my hardware wallet breaks or malfunctions?
The failure itself does not move the coins. Restore with a complete backup and any required passphrase on a compatible device. If the balance is zero, check the backup, network, account settings and known addresses before drawing a conclusion. If the phrase itself is incomplete or the device will not accept it, that is a separate problem from the broken hardware.
How do I recover my funds if I lose my hardware wallet?
Restore from your backup on compatible hardware, or a compatible software wallet if urgent access is needed, using the same passphrase and account settings if required. Check supported assets and networks before importing. A lost or stolen device may expose the keys: PIN protection and wipe behavior depend on the model and do not guarantee safety. Once access is restored, move the assets to a new wallet with a fresh backup under your control.
Can I transfer my crypto to a new hardware wallet if mine breaks?
You can restore the same accounts on a compatible device with the same backup, any required passphrase and matching account settings. It is not an actual transfer, but a secure reconstruction of access. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
What should I do if my hardware wallet is damaged beyond repair?
If your wallet is too damaged, use your seed phrase to restore it on a new device. If you are not sure, check the manufacturer’s support or ask a trusted expert. Physical damage does not itself move the coins; restoring access still requires the relevant backup, any passphrase and compatible account settings.
