BitBox and BitBox02: Backup, Seed Phrase and Lost Password Fixes

In short

BitBox recovery depends on the model and its backup. Identify the device before resetting it or experimenting with a microSD card.

  • BitBox01 uses its backup file together with the backup recovery password. It does not provide a BIP-39 word backup; a wrong recovery password can produce a different, empty wallet.
  • BitBox02 can be restored from a microSD backup or the recovery words. Restoration lets you set a new device password, but any optional passphrase is still needed for its separate wallet.
  • Preserve damaged cards. Missing words or a forgotten backup password require an assessment of the surviving information, rather than a guaranteed recovery.
BitBox and BitBox02: Backup, Seed Phrase and Lost Password Fixes

Locked out of a BitBox hardware wallet? What you can do next depends on which model you have, BitBox01 or BitBox02, and on what you still hold: the microSD backup card, the 24-word recovery phrase, or the backup password you set at setup.

Both models come from the Swiss company Shift Crypto, but they back up differently — the BitBox01 writes a backup file to a microSD card; that file is not encrypted, but restoring the wallet also requires its backup recovery password, while the BitBox02 can also show you a BIP-39 recovery phrase. That difference is why the recovery steps below split by model.

If you’ve lost your password, recovery phrase, or microSD card, Crypto Recovers can help. Our team offers safe, professional wallet recovery services to help you regain access to your BitBox hardware wallet.

BitBox Hardware Wallet Recovery

Unlike newer models, the BitBox01 does not require you to manually write down a recovery phrase. Instead, it automatically creates and stores wallet backups on a microSD card.

Keep this backup card somewhere other than with your BitBox01 device — that alone protects you if one of them is lost, stolen, or destroyed.

If you’ve lost access to your BitBox crypto wallet, follow these simple recovery steps:

  • Install the BitBox desktop app on your computer.
  • Insert the microSD card containing the backup into the BitBox01 before connecting the device.
  • Connect your BitBox01 device to the computer.
  • Launch the app and select “Restore from backup.”
  • Choose the correct backup file and enter your backup recovery password. Both are required — the card on its own is not enough, and the BitBox01 gives no error for a wrong password: it simply opens a different, empty wallet.

The original BitBox01 was discontinued in 2019 and reached end of life in 2020: Shift Crypto stopped releasing updates for it, and current BitBoxApp versions can only manage its backups — they can no longer send transactions. If you still hold funds on a BitBox01, restoring access is worth doing now, and moving the funds to a supported wallet afterwards is strongly advised.

Damaged BitBox MicroSD Cards

Damaged BitBox microSD backup card? What the card holds depends on the model: a BitBox01 card carries that model’s own backup file, while a BitBox02 card carries a backup from which the official tool can extract the BIP-39 recovery words.

The BitBox01 never shows you a 12- or 24-word phrase, and it does not store one. What it writes to the microSD card is a backup file, and that file is not encrypted — the wallet is derived from it together with the backup recovery password you set at the time, so the card on its own is not enough, and neither is the password. If the card cannot be read, this is a data-recovery problem rather than a seed problem.

The official BitBox backup recovery tool extracts BIP-39 recovery words from BitBox02 backups, not from BitBox01 ones. If your BitBox01 card is damaged or unreadable, Crypto Recovers can assess whether it can still be read.

If your backup card is cracked, corrupted, or unreadable, do not try to open or fix it yourself. You could permanently damage it. Store the card safely and avoid further wear.

Damaged cards can sometimes be read with specialized data-recovery methods, though success depends on the damage — we can assess whether yours is readable.

Lost your microSD and never wrote down your recovery phrase?
If your BitBox02 still works and you can unlock it with the device password, you can display the recovery words on the device or create another microSD backup through BitBoxApp. Do not reset it first. The optional passphrase is not included in either backup and remains necessary for its separate wallet. If no usable device or backup material remains, the keys cannot be recreated from the blockchain.

How to Restore BitBox02 Wallet

Lost access to your BitBox02 wallet? Like the BitBox01, the BitBox02 backs up to a microSD card by default. During setup you can instead choose to write down the recovery words: by default the BitBox02 creates a 24-word phrase (a 12-word option also exists), which is confirmed on the device itself. Each word comes from a fixed list of 2,048 English words, called the BIP39 wordlist.

For a BitBox02, restoring on compatible BitBox hardware through BitBoxApp is one route. A software wallet such as Electrum or BlueWallet can restore supported Bitcoin accounts when its BIP-39 import, passphrase, address type and derivation settings match. Neither wallet restores every asset supported by BitBox02.

Use the original recovery words in their exact order and the original passphrase if one was set. Check the restored addresses against an address you previously used.

As long as you keep your recovery phrase, your funds are safe.

BitBox Recovery Process Using Seed Phrase

To start BitBox 02 wallet recovery, make sure you have your backup ready. This could be a seed phrase or a backup file.

To recover BitBox 02 with your recovery phrase:

  • Download and install the BitBoxApp on your computer.
  • Plug in your new or reset BitBox device.
  • Select “Restore wallet” in the app.
  • Enter your 24-word phrase carefully and in order.

Once you confirm the recovery, the system restores your wallet, and your coins appear just as they did before.

Invalid BitBox Seed Phrase – What Now?

The written recovery phrase is one BitBox02 backup option. A microSD backup or an accessible device may still provide a route if the words are lost or invalid.

But if you still have some of the seed words written down, Crypto Recovers can help you brute-force the missing ones. Since BitBox uses the standard BIP39 wordlist, recovery tools can quickly test possible word combinations.

Our recovery experts actively:

  • Search your devices for hidden or deleted wallet data
  • Analyze and guess missing or misspelled seed words
  • Validate possible phrases using BIP39 logic

Don’t give up — if you have even part of your recovery phrase, Crypto Recovers will do everything we can to help you get back in.

Lost Optional BitBox Passphrase?

Recovered your BitBox wallet but your funds aren’t showing? You may have stored them in a hidden account protected by an optional passphrase. This extra layer of security is easy to overlook — but without the correct passphrase, your wallet can appear empty.

A forgotten passphrase is harder to recover than a forgotten password, but not impossible:

  • Try to recall or brute-force likely phrases you might have used.
  • Think of variations of your usual passwords or passphrases.
  • Use a secure tool or professional service to test possible passphrase combinations.

If you can’t recall the passphrase, Crypto Recovers can help. Our recovery specialists work on lost or forgotten passphrases and can guide you through safe, privacy-respecting recovery options.

Forgot BitBox Wallet Password?

The device password unlocks the device; it does not encrypt either model’s backup. A BitBox02’s microSD backup is not password-protected, and a BitBox01’s backup file is paired with a separate backup recovery password set during setup.

If you’ve forgotten your BitBox wallet password, there are two main options: either to restore the wallet from your 24-word seed phrase (BitBox02) or use your microSD backup and try to recall or guess the password (BitBox01).

Again, if you don’t have your SD card and seed there is a high chance of losing the access to the wallet forever. If your password wasn’t very complex or random, a professional recovery service can work through candidate passwords on a copy of the backup.

BitBox01 vs BitBox02: Features, Security, and Backup Options

BitBox01 and BitBox02 differ enough that recovery depends on which one you have. The table below covers what each model backs up, how, and what that means for getting back in without the device.

FAQ: BitBox Wallet Recovery

What is the BitBox wallet, and how does it work?

The BitBox wallet is a hardware cryptocurrency wallet developed by Shift Crypto to securely store private keys offline. It works by isolating private key operations from internet-connected devices, requiring user confirmation on-device. BitBox02 supports Bitcoin and other coins, backup via microSD or seed phrase, and optional passphrase for hidden wallets.

How do I recover my BitBox wallet if I’ve lost my password?

It depends on the model. On the BitBox02 you can restore from the recovery words written down during setup — 24 by default, with a 12-word option — or from the microSD backup, using the BitBoxApp. On the BitBox01 there is no recovery phrase, and the microSD card on its own is not enough: the backup file is not encrypted, but deriving the right wallet from it also takes the backup recovery password you set at the time, and a wrong password gives no error — it simply opens a different, empty wallet. If that password was not long or random, a professional service can work through candidates on a copy.

What should I do if my microSD backup card is damaged?

On a BitBox02 that still works and unlocks, create a fresh backup on another microSD card or display and record the recovery words. If the device is unavailable, use another valid microSD backup or your recorded words. On the BitBox01 there is no recovery phrase: the backup file on the microSD card is the only backup, and deriving the right wallet from it takes the backup recovery password you set at the time, so a damaged card is a data-recovery problem. If no usable device or backup data remains, the keys cannot be recreated from the blockchain. Crypto Recovers may help if partial data is retrievable.

How do I recover my BitBox02 wallet if I’ve lost my seed phrase?

Check for the microSD backup first: it can restore a BitBox02 without the written words. If you can still unlock the BitBox02, you can display the words on the device or create another microSD backup. Without usable secret data or backup material, the keys cannot be recreated from the blockchain. If you still have part of the phrase written down, missing or misspelled words can often be reconstructed against the BIP-39 word list, and that is where Crypto Recovers can help.

How to Recover BitBox Hidden Wallet with Passphrase?

To recover a BitBox hidden wallet with passphrase, restore the original seed phrase using BitBoxApp, then re-enter the exact passphrase. This regenerates the hidden wallet. Recovery is impossible without both the correct seed and passphrase. If you remember part of the passphrase or the pattern you used, Crypto Recovers can test candidate passphrases systematically.

How to use BitBox Passphrase?

The BitBox passphrase is an optional security layer that creates a hidden wallet derived from your main seed. It is entered during wallet setup or login and must be remembered exactly. A unique passphrase generates a distinct wallet; loss of the passphrase results in loss of access to that wallet.

Still locked out?

The first assessment is free, and it asks for no wallet secrets. Describe what you still have — a file, a phrase, a device, or what you remember — and we’ll tell you whether recovery is realistic. You only pay if the recovery succeeds.
