Exodus wallet recovery: the 12-word secret key, forgotten passwords and overwritten wallets - free assessment, success-based.
Quick answers
What can restore an Exodus wallet?
The 12-word secret key can restore the wallet. A previously configured mobile cloud backup or an accessible synced device may also provide access. The app password may still unlock surviving local data; it is not a replacement for a backup.
Can I restore Exodus from an old email backup?
Yes, if you still have a backup link from a wallet created before February 2019 and the password used when the link was made. It contains an encrypted backup of the secret key. Later password changes do not update that link, and new email backup links can no longer be created.
I restored and assets are missing. What now?
Re-enable the assets and networks you used and confirm that you restored the correct account and derivation path; a wallet may not display them until you enable them again.
Exodus is a multi-asset desktop and mobile wallet. Its 12-word secret key is the main recovery backup, but another accessible device or a backup configured earlier may also provide a way back in.
What you are actually dealing with
- The 12-word secret key (BIP-39): restores the wallet in Exodus without needing the old app password.
- App password: Exodus can lock the local wallet with a password. Forgetting it isn't a lost wallet - restore from the phrase and set a new password.
- Legacy email backup: available for wallets created before February 2019. An existing link contains an encrypted backup of the secret key and requires the password used when that link was created. Later password changes do not update it; new email backup links can no longer be created.
- Mobile cloud backup: a backup previously configured with a passkey in iCloud or Google Drive requires access to both the backup and that passkey. Restore in Exodus Mobile on the same operating system used to create it (iOS or Android).
- Older mobile cloud backup: backups created before November 2024 with email or SMS verification can still be restored using that method, with a seven-day waiting period. You need the original cloud account, the email address or phone number registered for verification, and the same operating system. After restoring, Exodus requires upgrading the backup to a passkey.
- Local data and synced devices: an accessible synced device can still show the secret key. If only encrypted local data remains, the app password may unlock it; preserve that data before reinstalling or resetting anything.
- Overwritten wallet: if you created a new wallet over the old one, the old data may still sit in the device's storage. Whether it does depends on how much the device has written since.
When professional recovery is the right call
- Several words are missing or unreadable, or the order is uncertain.
- You overwrote the wallet and the old data may still be on the device: a forensics case.
- You have forgotten the password to an email backup and need a structured search.
What is impossible
- No phrase, usable backup, accessible synced device or recoverable wallet data: there is no remaining material to restore or examine.
- Guessing a completely unknown 12-word phrase without any clues is not feasible.
Practical notes
- Never enter an Exodus secret key into a website.
- Back up the 12 words even when you use the email backup - the words are the master key.
